Nathalie and Bert capture a hallmark celebration of Hmong culture, the Hmong New Year, as they pass through Luang Prabang, Laos in their travels. I love the colors, the ball tossing, and the made-up faces.
Hmong New Year is upon us. The clans around Luang Prabang gather on a meadow in the city for a 5-day festival.
This is the place to find a partner. The Hmong courtship starts with a ball tossing game. People line up in two rows and toss balls at each other. Look at it as a way to break the proverbial ice.
We also tossed a couple of balls and had the chance to talk to some of the Hmong boys and girls looking for a partner.
This girl is still too young to get married, but she already knows how to pose.
Unlike some others, that still have a bit more to learn.
